On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, the student body of Accra College of Education (ACCE) took part in a highly anticipated event—the elections for the 2024/2025 Students’ Representative Council (SRC). These elections marked a significant moment in the college's history, as students from various halls of residence came together to elect the new crop of leaders who would represent their interests for the academic year ahead.
The voting process began at 10:00 a.m. and saw a steady turnout of students eager to exercise their democratic rights. Polls closed later in the evening, with counting stretching late into the night, culminating in final results at 1:52 a.m. on Wednesday. As the dust settled, a new set of SRC executives, including hall presidents, commissioners, and the core SRC leaders, emerged to take up the mantle of student governance.
A Historic Runoff and the Rise of Team BAKE
One of the most closely watched races was for the SRC presidency, which featured a runoff between two major contenders—Team BAKE and Team ALLAH. The runoff was triggered when neither team managed to achieve the 50+1 vote threshold, a requirement set by the General Assembly for declaring a clear winner.
Notably, Team CHANGE, led by the only female presidential candidate from the Degree Program in the history of the ACCE SRC, was unable to meet the vote requirement and was withdrawn from the runoff.
Despite her exit, her candidacy served as a historic moment, inspiring future female leaders within the college.
The runoff took place on the same day, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and closing at 4:30 p.m. It was an intense contest, with both teams rallying support from their respective camps. In the end, Team BAKE emerged victorious, securing 585 votes, while Team ALLAH trailed closely behind with 567 votes. The margin, though narrow, signalled the arrival of a new chapter in student leadership, with Team BAKE officially declared the SRC president-elect.
The Future Under New Leadership
With the elections now over, the newly elected SRC executives are tasked with steering the affairs of the student body and working towards the progress and well-being of the ACCE community. Their victory, hard-fought and well-deserved, comes with high expectations from the student populace, who are eager to see their leaders deliver on campaign promises.
Among the key portfolios filled are the hall presidents, commissioners, and the core SRC executive team. These individuals, chosen through the collective voice of the student body, now have the responsibility of ensuring a unified and well-represented student front. Their leadership is expected to foster collaboration, innovation, and progress within the college, as they work hand in hand to achieve common goals.
Best Wishes for the New Executives
As the new leaders take up their respective roles, we extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for a successful tenure. Their journey to leadership has been marked by determination, and their future endeavours will undoubtedly shape the experience of students at Accra College of Education.
