Distinguished Scholar and Educator Dr Samuel Atintono Celebrates Professorship with Massive Party

Dr Samuel Awinkene Atintono, the eighth Principal of Accra College of Education (AcCE), celebrated his recent attainment of the professorship with a massive party on Saturday, 28th Jan.

Dr Atintono, who has been a professional teacher and educationist for almost two decades, has made a significant impact in the field of teacher education, particularly in academia. His studies and teachings have been centred on Ghanaian languages, linguistics, literacy, and culture.

Before taking on his position as the principal of AcCE in November 2018, Dr Atintono served as the Head of the Department of Gur-Gonja Languages Education at the University of Education, Winneba for four years, and also as the Dean of the Faculty of Ghanaian Languages at the same institution.


In addition to his impressive credentials in Ghana, Dr Atintono has also been recognized as a distinguished scholar at the international level. He has received two prestigious scholarship awards: the Commonwealth Academic Scholarship award for his PhD at The University of Manchester, UK, from September 2008 to January 2013, and the Fulbright Visiting Research Scholar award from November 2017 to August 2018 at the University of Florida, Gainesville, USA.

Dr Atintono's research interests include language use in education, language policy, literacy and development, linguistic rights of minority or understudied languages in Ghana and Africa, orthography development, lexicography, and Mabia (Gur) languages spoken in Ghana, particularly Farefari (Boone, Guren, Nabt, Nankani, and Taln), descriptive, documentary, and theoretical (cognitive) linguistics. He has published multiple articles, book chapters, and books in both local and international magazines or publishers on various elements of Guren linguistics and other genetically related Gur (Mabia) languages, and also acts as a reviewer for various publications covering language or linguistic concerns in both local and international periodicals.

Dr Atintono has also served as a consultant for several education and literacy programs done in Ghana by Development Partners such as DFID, USAID, the World Bank, and World Education, Ghana.


The party to celebrate his professorship was attended by many of his colleagues, students, and well-wishers, who all came together to congratulate him on this major achievement. The celebration was filled with diverse people to celebrate a man who has dedicated his career to the advancement of education and the study of Ghanaian languages.
