Ghana Tertiary Education Commission Requests Salary Hold for Striking CETAG Members

In a recent development amidst a strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission has taken a decisive step. In a letter dated August 21, 2023, addressed to The Controller & Accountant General (CAGD), the Commission has requested the suspension of salary and allowances for the month of August 2023 for the teaching staff of all 46 Colleges of Education under CETAG.

The letter, drafted at the behest of the Honourable Minister of Education, cites ongoing negotiations and the current strike action as the reason for this move. It appeals for the cooperation of all stakeholders and an urgent response to this measure. The decision, however, does not extend to any arrears owed to the teachers prior to August 2023. These pending dues are expected to be validated and disbursed accordingly.

The strike, which has been prompted by unpaid allowances, has left teachers and students alike in a state of uncertainty. The Commission's decision to withhold salaries for August is an evident step in their attempt to bring both sides to the negotiation table. CETAG's demand for unpaid allowances has drawn attention to the challenges faced by educators within Ghana's tertiary education system.

Endorsed by Saaka Sayuti, the Director of Administration for the Director-General, the letter was also carbon-copied to the Honourable Ministers of Education and Finance, along with the Principals of all Colleges of Education. This demonstrates the significance of the situation and the gravity of the decisions at hand.

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders eagerly await a response from CETAG and government representatives. The broader impact of this strike and the Commission's subsequent action on the educational landscape of Ghana remains to be seen.
