NOTES TO MYSELF: THY JOURNEY OF BECOMING
In the depths of my soul, a journey begins
A path unwinding, where heart and spirit spin
To become the person, I'm meant to be
A work of art, crafted with every breath, wild and free
Note to self: Be gentle, kind, and true
Embrace the beauty, in all you do
In every step, in every fall
Rise up, and learn to stand tall
Thy journey is thine, unique and rare
A tapestry woven, with every care
Moments of joy, of sorrow, of strife
All shaping thee, into a life
Note to self: Don't be afraid to roam
Explore the depths, of thy heart's home
For in the darkness, lies a spark
A light that guides thee, through life's embark
Thou art a person, becoming, growing
With every note, every scar, thou art showing
Thy true self, unfolding like a rose
A masterpiece, in every way, it grows
Note to self: Love thyself, through it all
The triumphs, the failures, the rise, the fall
For in the end, it's not the destination
But the journey, that makes thee a creation

Introduction
"NOTES TO MYSELF: THY JOURNEY OF BECOMING" is a profound and introspective poem by Francis Elikem Kosi Mawusi. It explores the theme of self-discovery and personal growth, emphasizing the importance of embracing every aspect of one’s journey in life. Through its reflective tone and vivid imagery, the poem invites readers to consider the beauty and challenges of becoming one's true self.
Theme and Structure
The central theme of the poem revolves around the journey of self-realization and personal development. Mawusi artfully conveys that life is not merely about reaching a destination but about the experiences, lessons, and transformations that occur along the way. The structure of the poem is deliberate, with each stanza offering a "note to self," serving as a reminder or affirmation to the speaker and the reader alike. This repetitive device reinforces the introspective nature of the poem, allowing readers to pause and reflect on their own journeys.
Imagery and Language
Mawusi employs rich imagery to convey the multifaceted nature of the human experience. Phrases like "a tapestry woven, with every care" and "unfolding like a rose" evoke a sense of gradual and deliberate growth, suggesting that personal development is a continuous process. The poem's language is both gentle and empowering, urging the reader to embrace kindness, resilience, and self-love. The juxtaposition of "moments of joy, of sorrow, of strife" encapsulates the complexity of life, where each experience contributes to the shaping of one's identity.
Tone and Voice
The tone of the poem is nurturing and reassuring, with the speaker offering guidance and encouragement to themselves. This tone is consistent throughout the poem, creating a sense of inner dialogue where the speaker is both the mentor and the student. The voice of the poem is deeply personal, yet it resonates universally, making it relatable to anyone who has experienced the challenges of growth and self-discovery.
Symbolism and Metaphor
Symbolism is prevalent in the poem, with the journey serving as a metaphor for life itself. The path that "unwinds" symbolizes the unpredictable nature of life, where each twist and turn contributes to the overall experience. The recurring metaphor of a "work of art" suggests that each individual is a unique creation, shaped by their experiences. The poem also uses light and darkness as symbols of guidance and challenge, respectively, highlighting the duality of the human experience.
Conclusion
"NOTES TO MYSELF: THY JOURNEY OF BECOMING" is a poignant reminder of the importance of self-compassion and resilience. Through its eloquent language, evocative imagery, and thoughtful structure, the poem offers a message of hope and empowerment. Mawusi encourages readers to embrace their personal journeys, acknowledging that every experience—whether joyful or painful—contributes to the masterpiece of their lives. In doing so, the poem serves as both a reflection on the past and a guide for the future, making it a timeless piece of inspirational literature.
