ASSESSMENT, MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION


ASSESSMENT
• Assessment is a broad term which is defined as a process for obtaining
information that is used for making decisions about students, curriculum and
educational policies. • Assessment is broadly defined to include all activities that teachers and students
undertake to get information that can be used diagnostically to alter teaching
and learning.

MEASUREMENT
• Measurement refers to the process by which attributes or dimensions of
some physical objects are determined. • Measurement is also a process of assigning numbers to individuals for the
purpose of indicating the degree to which they possess certain
characteristics.

EVALUATION
• Evaluation is the process of making a judgement about the objectives and goals
to ascertain the worthiness, and appropriateness, of their outcomes for which a
reliable measurement or assessment has been made. • Evaluation involves three major steps which are collection, analysis and
judgement of information

GUIDELINES FOR SELECTING ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES

• The teacher needs to be clear about the learning target to be assessed. 
• The assessment technique selected must serve the needs of the
learners. 
• The assessment technique must match the nature of the subject.
• The assessment technique must be based on multiple indicators of performance
• The limitations of the various assessment techniques must be taken into consideration when asseement results are being interpreted. 
• Assessment should be valid and reliable

PURPOSE OF ASSESSMENT
• Assessment provides information on the readiness of pupils to learn something
new. 
• It helps teachers to set realistic and achievable instructional goals and objectives
for the class. 
• It puts the teacher in a better position to select the appropriate
instructional technique for the class
• It helps teachers assign grades to pupils which serve as records for their
progress and achievement. 
• It serves as the basis for selection and rejection in institutions
• It provides information for the placement of students into appropriate
courses and classes where they are likely to succeed
• provides information which is used to group learners on the basis of
their individual difference. 
• Assessment helps the teacher to motivate, direct and facilitate pupils
learning
• Assessment results are used to assist students in choosing careers and
in directing them to prepare for the careers they have selected
