Kumasi, June 12, 2025 – In a remarkable demonstration of reformation and second chances, five male inmates from the Kumasi Central Prisons are among candidates writing the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which officially began on Wednesday, June 11.
The young inmates, aged between 20 and 25 years, are sitting for their exams at the Bantama Examination Centre. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ghana Prisons Service, aligns with the service’s broader rehabilitation agenda to equip inmates with the necessary tools for reintegration into society.
As part of his monitoring tour of BECE centres within the metropolis, the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, paid a visit to the Bantama Centre to encourage the participating inmates.
“I am happy to see these inmates writing the BECE, and it's a symbol of hope in their lives,” the MCE stated. He further assured them of support from the Assembly to cover their WASSCE registration fees, should they choose to pursue further academic advancement.
The MCE’s tour extended to several other examination centres, including Opoku Ware School Centre (Nhyiaso Constituency), Adventist SHS and Asanteman SHS (Bantama Constituency), and Serwaa Nyarko SHS Centre (Manhyia North Constituency).
During his visit, Hon. Boadi addressed hundreds of BECE candidates, urging them to remain focused and avoid examination malpractice.
“Your destiny commences today. Take these exams seriously and be honest with your efforts—it is the key to a bright future,” he advised.
The Ashanti Region alone is hosting 120,285 candidates across 432 examination centres, forming a significant portion of the national candidate pool of over 600,000 students.
This year's BECE, which spans across the country, is not only a milestone for Ghana's educational calendar but also a reflection of progressive rehabilitation policies taking root in correctional institutions. The involvement of prison inmates in national examinations underscores the power of education in transforming lives, even behind bars.
As the exams continue, education stakeholders, civil society groups, and the general public have lauded the Ghana Prisons Service and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly for their collaborative effort in promoting inclusive education and giving hope to all, regardless of their circumstances.
