In light of growing misinformation and public confusion following a recent directive by the Minister of Education, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, the National Teaching Council (NTC) has issued an official clarification to clarify the status of the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE).
Contrary to viral reports suggesting an outright cancellation of the GTLE with immediate effect, the NTC has made it categorically clear that the ongoing licensure exams scheduled from Friday, July 19 to Sunday, July 21, 2025, will proceed as planned. According to a Facebook statement published by NTC’s Public Affairs Directorate:
“The Minister’s statement in this video does not in any way affect the upcoming GTLE scheduled for Friday to Sunday. The new form of GTLE shall strictly commence with candidates who are about completing their academic courses. All 2025 registered candidates should take note and adhere to this notice.”👇👇👇
This clarification follows a directive by Minister Haruna Iddrisu on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, during the inauguration of the new governing board of the NTC. The Minister announced a policy shift to phase out the existing licensure examination format by August 30, 2025, in favour of a new framework that integrates licensure assessments into the academic and practical training structure of colleges of education and teacher-training institutions.
Mr. Iddrisu noted that the move is part of broader reforms to improve teacher qualification processes in Ghana, stating:
“The last of the Teacher Licensure Exams must be concluded not later than August 30. If there is a final opportunity for those who sat and couldn’t make it, that process should not go beyond August 30.”
The Minister emphasised that future assessments will focus more on in-course academic training and supervised teaching practicums, rather than relying solely on standardised national examinations.
However, this change does not affect current licensure examination candidates, especially resit candidates, who have one final opportunity to write and pass the GTLE this weekend. The NTC reaffirmed:
“Re-sit candidates are to register and write for the last time this Friday… Failure to do so, from the current stance, means re-sit candidates are to register and join their junior colleagues on campus to write.”
It is therefore misleading and irresponsible to claim that the GTLE has been cancelled immediately. Rather, the structure and administration of the GTLE is transitioning, beginning with teacher trainees who have yet to complete their academic coursework. For these upcoming graduates, the new teacher licensing model will be embedded within their end-of-semester assessments, aligning teacher qualification with university-based academic performance.
The GTLE, introduced in 2018 by the National Teaching Council under the previous administration, was designed to assess prospective teachers’ professional knowledge, subject content mastery, pedagogical skills, and readiness for classroom practice. It has since been a mandatory requirement for teacher certification and employment within the Ghana Education Service (GES).
As of now, all registered candidates for the July 2025 GTLE should disregard unfounded social media claims of cancellation and prepare to take part in the scheduled exams.
The NTC urges the public, media outlets, and stakeholders to refrain from spreading false information and to consult only official NTC channels for accurate updates.
“STOP SPREADING FALSE INFORMATION THAT THE LICENSURE EXAMS HAS BEEN CANCELLED,” the statement concludes.
