Abstract

This study explored the effectiveness of the discussion method in teaching Religious and Moral Education (RME) to Basic Seven learners at Asafo Roman Catholic Basic School in Abuakwa North. The aim was to determine whether learner participation and understanding of RME concepts could be improved through interactive teaching approaches. Findings revealed that when students were actively involved in discussions, their comprehension, critical thinking, and moral reasoning skills improved significantly compared to traditional lecture-based methods.

Introduction

Religious and Moral Education plays a vital role in shaping the moral values, ethical reasoning, and cultural identity of learners in Ghana. However, the subject is often taught using the lecture method, which limits student participation and critical engagement. This study set out to investigate how the discussion method could be applied effectively to enhance learning outcomes in RME for Basic Seven learners.

Methodology

  • Population: Basic Seven learners at Asafo Roman Catholic Basic School
  • Sample Size: [Insert sample if available]
  • Research Design: Classroom-based action research
  • Teaching Method Applied: Discussion method, where learners shared ideas, debated moral issues, and engaged with real-life scenarios.
  • Data Collection Tools: Observation, learner participation records, and assessment results.

Findings

  1. Active Participation: Learners were more engaged when given opportunities to express their views.
  2. Improved Understanding: Students demonstrated deeper comprehension of RME concepts compared to traditional methods.
  3. Moral Development: The discussion method encouraged moral reasoning, teamwork, and respect for differing opinions.
  4. Confidence Building: Learners gained confidence in expressing themselves and asking questions.

Conclusion

The study concluded that the discussion method is an effective teaching strategy for Religious and Moral Education at the basic level. It promotes learner-centred teaching, critical thinking, and moral development. Teachers are encouraged to adopt interactive methods, such as discussions, role-playing, and group work, to enhance learning outcomes.

Recommendations

  • Teachers should integrate discussion methods regularly into RME lessons.
  • Educational policymakers should provide training on learner-centred pedagogies.
  • Further studies can examine the long-term effects of discussion methods on learner performance across other subjects.
