The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has officially called off its strike action after an emergency virtual meeting held by the National Council on Tuesday, 20th August 2024. The strike, which lasted over eight weeks, was suspended following assurances from the Government of Ghana.
The decision to end the strike comes after a series of meetings between CETAG and key government officials, including a meeting with the Office of the Vice President on 15th August 2024. During this meeting, the government assured CETAG that their concerns would be addressed with a clear roadmap for resolution. These assurances were further confirmed during a meeting on 19th August 2024 at the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations (MELR).
Despite calling off the strike, CETAG has made it clear that the strike action will resume at the end of October 2024 if the government fails to meet the agreed-upon conditions. These conditions include the payment of frozen salaries for July and August 2024, the completion of offline staff migration, and the payment of compensation for All-Year-Round work done in 2022.
CETAG also emphasized the importance of aligning the nomenclature for teaching staff with that of affiliate universities and ensuring that all holders of researched Master’s degrees are migrated as Assistant Lecturers.
The National Council of CETAG expressed gratitude to the Vice President’s Senior Advisor, Mr. Fred Oware, for his role in resolving the impasse, as well as to various government ministers, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and the media for their commitment to resolving the issues.
The association also extended its appreciation to its members across the 46 colleges of education for their unwavering support during the strike.
For further information, CETAG's National President, Mr. Prince Obeng-Himah, and Acting National Secretary, Mr. Thomas Ampomah, can be contacted.
