The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has moved to reassure its members following the circulation of a letter from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) dated 19th August 2024, which initially caused alarm regarding the suspension of August salaries.
The letter, which directed the Controller and Accountant General's Department (CAGD) to withhold the August 2024 salaries for teaching staff at Colleges of Education, was issued before a crucial meeting between CETAG and government officials. During this meeting, held on 19th August 2024 at the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations (MELR), it was agreed that the ongoing strike by CETAG would be called off, and a directive was given for the immediate payment of both July and August salaries.

According to CETAG’s Acting National Secretary, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, GTEC’s Acting Director General, was instructed by both the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations and the Minister of Education to inform CAGD about the new developments. Following this directive, Prof. Jinapor contacted CAGD, advising them to delay any action on the non-validation letter and await further instructions from the ministry.
CETAG has assured its members that there is no need for concern over the earlier GTEC letter. The association has confirmed that a new letter will soon be issued by GTEC to authorize the release of the withheld salaries. A call has already been made to CAGD, instructing them to proceed with the validation and payment of both July and August salaries.
CETAG leadership remains in close contact with the relevant government authorities to ensure that the issue is resolved promptly. Members are advised to stay calm, as the situation is under control, and the payment of their salaries is expected to proceed without further delay.
