Uniform-Free Colleges: Minister Urges Decency as Colleges Move Away from Mandatory Uniforms

The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has expressed support for the move to make uniform wearing non-compulsory in colleges of education. This was revealed during a courtesy visit by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of Accra College of Education (AcCE) to the Minister at his office yesterday.

Led by H.E. Richmond Adjei, the SRC delegation discussed the importance of providing trainees with the freedom to choose their attire, as uniforms are not a requirement in the teaching profession. Dr. Adutwum encouraged the SRC to continue engaging with college management to facilitate these changes and pledged to discuss the matter with the Principal, who is also the Chair of the Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), to ensure a smooth implementation across all 46 public colleges in the country.

Dr. Adutwum emphasized the importance of maintaining decency in dressing, even as students enjoy greater freedom in their clothing choices. The SRC believes that revising the uniform policy will empower trainees and create a more supportive learning environment.
